Waking up in the pitch dark has been a part of my life for a very long time, ever since I delivered newspapers at 4am with my mom growing up.  Things are mostly calm, the dark seems strangely unscary, and the daylight is about to introduce itself.

Today, my thoughts are as clear as my plan: I must position myself perfectly just in case something incredible happens.

Even if it is not incredible, it is still always worth the attempt.  Here are some of my favorite attempts.

I saw these broken pieces sticking up in the early dawn and I knew it could lead to something interesting in North Carolina.

In the dark, there was just a slight trace of this giant shell....so I waited for the sun to see it reveal itself.
Despite the sun being blocked by the clouds, I experimented with shutter speeds to create a painterly effect.
The early fog revealed a tranquil autumn scene.
This was a moment I always dreamed of---and here it was in Bora Bora.

The interweaving locks of land with the water made it a haven for birds of all kinds in North Dakota.
