The one aspect of photography I appreciate the most is that exploration is a prerequisite.  That is of course, if you’re looking to create something unique or never seen before.  That truly defines successful art in my eyes.

One particular morning while I was exploring and taking pictures, I kept walking along the coast of Cozumel, Mexico.  I knew from previous experience Mexico had plenty of photographic surprises.

Each step looked the same, step after step. After step.

Until finally there was a slow incline.

As I reached the peak, I looked down to uncover a huge cove, filled only with a few feet of water, but home to all kinds of unknowns.

The mind and creative flow begins immediately when encountering something like this.

For a photographer, that is exhilarating.  It is what we are searching for.  It is what makes exploration worthwhile.

This discovery led to a few of my favorite images from the trip.  As a bonus, my family and I took a hike to experience this secret treasure together.

I came back a few times to see what this mysterious cove could create.

Cove at Cozumel Mexico
This tranquil and simple scene of a singular cloud really captured the mood of this place.
I waited until noon to make sure the sunlight would eliminate all of the mysteries below. A boat settled in the ocean near shore, and created a unique marker and depth to this image.

The more steps we take to explore beyond our comfort zone, the more amazing things we will discover.
