Here comes the rain.

For most, it means that we cover up, run, and hide inside.

For me, however, I find that rain can present the most intriguing pictures.  Sometimes rain creates peaceful scenes, while other times, more powerful pictures form slowly as the dramatic atmosphere builds.

I must admit that rain and accompanying elements frequently result in null and void pictures, not to mention wet equipment, but that doesn’t stop me from trying to capture the unique pictures rain can create.

Here are some of my favorite moments when the rains came.

Water Droplets in Pond

I could feel the small trickle as I walked around the perimeter of this pond in North Carolina. I knew the ripples in the water is what might give extra mood to the photo.

The morning light came and so did a light shower dousing the crops with much needed rain in South Dakota.
This was a magical moment that will be forever engrained in my brain. The beauty of this place was punctuated as the early evening sun painted a rainbow like a fairy tale in Kauai, Hawaii.
Birdhouse in rainstorm

A distant rain shower approaches and I caught this scene moments before it enveloped the bird house.
I admit that these are not raindrops. I wanted to add more drama to this amazing glowing flower in the sunlight by spraying mist across the scene.
I stood on a hillside admiring the thunderstorm as it paraded by this compelling scene.

As I drove along a random road, I noticed the clouds building up. Shortly thereafter, sheets of rain began falling and I frantically took my position to add an interesting foreground.  I really enjoy the patterns and beautiful light as the early evening sun spotlighted the rain to make it shimmer.
