Let me introduce you to PHOTOn.

PHOTOn is my newest flying air lens.  He is indeed an aerial photographer's best friend, so I had no choice but to name him.

Symmetry magazine describes what exactly a photon is:

A photon is a particle, a wave, and an excitation...the smallest possible packets of electromagnetic energy.
Photons are essential in cosmology: the study of the past, present and future of the universe.

(Photons are) the fundamental particle of light and both ordinary and full of surprises.

In this case, this particular PHOTOn rides the light, records the light, and captures all the magnificent things that are illuminated around it and below it from the air.  It's my job to make sure it gets in the perfect position at the perfect time.

You have to agree that this name (at least) is perfect, right?

Okay, so most people refer to these "flying lenses" as drones.  Yes, it is a drone, but I have to say that the word "drone" has all kinds of negative connotations that I despise.

People hear of "drone strikes" on the news or creepy drones that lurk at your bedroom window.  I can assure you that this is a peaceful camera lens that only seeks to capture the beautiful nature scenes below it.

In order to fly PHOTOn, I had to acquire a Remote Pilot Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration.  If this interests you, you can learn more the steps required to become a licensed commercial drone pilot.

PHOTOn and I have had a busy year, and I am excited to show you some of the breathtaking views from the air!

This is Hermit Lake at first light. While fall was not in full force quite yet, there was one particular tree that caught my attention.

As I flew in the crisp pure air in Colorado, I was able to see all of the wonderful autumn colors.

I only had to fly up several more feet from a normal perspective to elongate the beautiful flowing wave beneath. Sometimes it's only a few more feet in elevation that makes all the difference.

The early morning light strikes the beautiful landscape below in Crested Butte, Colorado.
Beautiful Missouri Bridge River Sunset Aerial Photo

The water was a glassy mirror--more than I have ever seen, so this plus the sunset was special. And then the boat passed through perfectly. My hands were shaking on the controls, but was delighted to see the result.
Mt. Sneffels Aerial Picture

The afternoon spotlights the trees among the beautiful Colorado mountain valley and Mt. Sneffels.
Lake Dillon Sailboat Aerial Drone Picture

Several sailboats take the waters at Lake Dillon to explore, and I chose to take to the air!

PHOTOn is actually my second "flying lens."  I purchased the very first DJI Phantom many many years ago and it was quite exciting.   People saw me flying it and couldn't believe what they were seeing. Frankly, neither could I.

The problem back then, however, was that the camera just wasn't up to par with quality.  I'm happy to say that the camera is now quite capable and records the breathtaking views that we would never be able to see otherwise.  This is quite exciting for me and hope you stay tuned for many more unique aerial pictures from PHOTOn.
